Haidhausen is located on the eastern Isar Hochterrasse and borders on the Isar in the west, which also separates the district from the opposite centre. Surrounding districts are Bogenhausen in the north, Berg am Laim in the east and the Au in the south. Together with the Au, Haidhausen forms the urban district 5. The urban district has about 62,000 inhabitants and is spread over an area of about 421.96 hectares.
Haidhausen originated as a craftsmen's quarter and was one of the most densely built-up districts in Munich. In the 1970s many old buildings were renovated, making the area more attractive. Today Haidhausen is one of Munich's trendy and amusement districts, together with Schwabing and the Gärtnerplatzviertel.
LIFE IN HAIDHAUSEN
Since Haidhausen was hardly destroyed in the war, the townscape is characterised by old buildings, especially in the French Quarter.
